Black pudding campaign batters on

Stornoway black pudding

A campaign to get the European Union to grant special protected status to Stornoway black pudding has taken a step forward.

Local butchers have met representatives of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar (Western Isles Council) and Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE).

Getting protected status would put Stornoway black pudding among the likes of Stilton cheese and Parma ham.

It would stop producers from outside the islands using the Stornoway label.

Labour Highland and Islands MSP Rhoda Grant was also at the meeting.

She said, if successful, the move could potentially lead to a boom in production which would create new jobs.
