One person has been detained in connection with a fatal road accident on Skye on Sunday night.

It follows a police appeal for help in tracing a vehicle alleged to have left the scene of the crash near Kyleakin.

A 36-year-old passenger in one of the vehicles involved died and two others needed hospital treatment.

A police spokesman confirmed that officers had traced a third vehicle, which they believe was involved but failed to stop.

It is understood that one person has been detained.

In a separate development, a man travelling in one of the cars involved has been charged with stealing a vehicle in England.

Patrick Gilheaney, 26, from Haslingden, Lancashire, appeared in private on petition at Portree Sheriff Court. He made no plea or declaration and was remanded in custody.
