Rallying joins 'green' campaign

A major competition has signed up to a forum which aims to make motorsports more environmentally-friendly.

The Scottish Rally Championship (SRC) has joined Energy Efficient Motorsport (EEMS) - an organisation launched four years ago.

Campbell Roy, business manager of McRae Motorsport, said the move gave the championship potential access to alternative fuels.

EEMS objectives include helping the sport meet environmental legislation.

Mr Roy said: "We are looking at different things to be more efficient and by joining Energy Efficient Motorsport means people can come to us with a product, or biofuel, that we might be interested in."

Record levels

He said the SRC was eager to be more fuel efficient.

Any impact of recent rises in fuel costs and effects of the Credit Crunch on rallying were unlikely to be known until later this year, Mr Roy said.

The championship events include the Snowman Rally in the Highlands and Aberdeen-based Granite City Rally.

Earlier this month, the BBC Scotland News website found motorsport in Scotland has so far been unscathed and has even flourished in the face of high fuel costs.

The Scottish Motor Racing Club (SMRC) said entries for its competitions were at record levels.

Followers of rallying said the pursuit had also not been seriously affected.

Meanwhile, Highland Car Club - based in an area where it had cost about £1.19 for a litre of unleaded petrol - did not anticipate any major impact.
