Distillery damages for footballer

An amateur footballer with ambitions to play professionally has been awarded damages for injuries suffered in an accident at a Highlands distillery.

Billy McGhee was a 20-year-old trainee service engineer when his right foot was broken at Glen Ord distillery, at Muir of Ord, in 2003.

The accident involved screw-feeder machinery at the distillery.

Lord Malcolm, sitting in the Outer House in the Court of Session, awarded damages of more than £200,000.

The judge's opinion said Mr McGhee had ambitions to play professionally and had spells as an amateur with Queens Park FC but until the accident had played for Busby Amateurs.

Mr McGhee had raised an action in the Court of Session, Edinburgh, against drinks business and Glen Ord owners, Diageo.
