Code aims to safeguard fossils

Damaged fossil

The world's first code aimed at fossil collectors has been launched by the Scottish Government.

Drawn up by Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH), it defines best practice and responsible behaviour in the collection and care of fossils.

SNH drafted the code with assistance from fossil collectors, landowners, researchers and museums.

It was launched at the Cromarty home of the 19th Century Scottish geologist Hugh Miller.

Environment Minister Michael Russell said: "Fossil collecting is an increasingly popular hobby and amateur collectors often unearth rare and important finds."

'Dinosaur remains'

He added that launching the code at Hugh Miller's birthplace was "a testimony to both his foresight and the value we place on his legacy".

The principles of the fossil code establish a nationally-agreed framework of advice on best practice in the collection, identification, conservation and storage of fossil specimens.

It includes guidance on how to collect fossils responsibly without damaging them or the areas where they are found.

SNH director Susan Davies said: "Scotland boasts some of the rarest and most scientifically important fossils in the world, from some of the earliest land plants and fossil fish to early mammal and dinosaur remains.

"Our fossil heritage helps us understand the evolution of life on Earth and the geological development of Scotland, and ties Scotland's geology into the global story."
