Sea canoeist dies and son missing

A man has died and his 13-year-old son is missing after their canoe was washed up on a beach on the Isle of Lewis.

A major search was launched after a woman spotted the pair in a canoe out at sea at 1600 BST on Monday. She found the empty canoe 15 minutes later.

A 60-year-old man was rescued from the sea and was taken to the Western Isles Hospital, where he later died.

The search for the teenager was called off late on Monday and was due to resume at first light.

Five coastguard teams and a helicopter were involved in the search for the canoeists who are believed to be from the island.
