'Nowheresville' comment apology

Weather symbol A BBC weather presenter has apologised after calling the Western Isles and the west Highlands "nowheresville" during a live weather broadcast.

The Met Office forecaster, Tomasz Schafernaker, made the comments during a BBC One bulletin on Saturday.

The SNP complained and their Western Isles MP Angus MacNeil offered weather presenters a visit to his constituency.

In a statement, Mr Schafernaker said he wished to "sincerely apologise" and "deeply regretted" his choice of words.

The weatherman explained that he was pointing to a moutainous area in the Highlands whilst describing isolated showers in the area.

He said: "My intention was only to convey that very few people were likely to catch a shower on that day.

"It was in no way a comment or opinion on the area or the people that live there."
