Housing site blaze 'deliberate'

Police believe a fire which has caused considerable damage to a housing development under construction in Glasgow was started deliberately.

Emergency services were called to the four-storey structure in Kelvindale Glade, near Maryhill, at about 1940 BST on Sunday.

Firefighters were at the scene of the blaze, which caused "extensive damage" throughout the night.

Police are checking CCTV footage from the local area.

They are also carrying out door-to-door inquiries.

Det Con Liz Cameron, of Strathclyde Police, said: "Fortunately nobody was injured as a result of the fire - a fire which has caused significant damage to the development.

'Suspicious manner'

"There is no estimate as to the cost of this damage, however, it is expected to run into hundreds of thousands of pounds.

"I would appeal to anyone who was in the area of Kelvindale Glade, Kelvindale Road, and saw anyone behaving in a suspicious manner, either during the day or evening to contact us."

Five crews from Maryhill, Yorkhill, Knightswood and Cowcaddens were called in to deal with the fire.

A spokesman for Strathclyde Fire and Rescue said scaffolding surrounding the building "had started to buckle due to the intensity of the heat from the fire".

A four-storey building, adjacent to the development, was evacuated as a precaution.
