Boxer has jail sentence reduced

Scott Harrison, PA

Former world boxing champion Scott Harrison has had his jail sentences reduced by two months.

Harrison was jailed for a total of six months in September after he admitted drinking and driving and breaching his bail conditions.

His lawyer told two judges at the Court of Appeal in Edinburgh that the boxer was keen to return to the ring as soon as possible.

He will now serve a four month and a two month sentence at the same time.

Solicitor advocate John Keenan told the court that Harrison had been keeping himself fit in Barlinnie and hoped to go back to his chosen career as a professional boxer.

He said: "Like any sporting career it can be a short one. If he is afforded another opportunity it would, in all probability, have to be regarded as his last chance.

"If delayed any further it is probable his last chance will have gone."

Bail breach

Harrison had been caught driving his car in while almost four times over the legal alcohol limit.

He was also flouting a curfew order, and should have been at home.

In September, Sheriff Lindsay Wood jailed him for four months on the drink driving charge and added two months for breaching the bail condition.

Lord Kingarth, sitting with temporary judge Brian Lockhart QC, said that instead of serving the two sentences consecutively, they could be made concurrent - cutting the six month total to four months.

Spanish charges

Harrison of Cambuslang Road, Glasgow, is serving a string of separate jail terms.

Hours before the driving incident sentences he was jailed for two months for attacking his pregnant girlfriend Stacey Gardner, 26, and assaulting a police officer.

Harrison has also been given a two month sentence for an unrelated street assault.

The boxer also faces a possible 11 years in a Spanish jail if a trial on assault and robbery charges on the Costa del Sol goes ahead.
