Supermarket giant plans new store

Supermarket giant, Asda, has announced plans to build a new store in Larkhall in South Lanarkshire.

The 31,000 sq ft shop would be built off Broomhill Gate and could create up to 350 new full and part-time jobs in the town.

A planning application is due to be submitted to South Lanarkshire Council in the next few weeks.

There will also be a public consultation to hear the views of local residents and traders.

The proposed development would include the new store, a petrol filling station, 370 car parking spaces, a public recycling facility and additional housing for the area.

Closer to home

Lisa Rooke, property communications manager for Asda Scotland, said: "We are extremely excited about our plans for Larkhall.

"We know that many people currently travel out of Larkhall to do their supermarket shopping and we feel that by offering a store in Larkhall, customers would be able to shop closer to home and will easily be able to visit other shops and businesses in the area."

She added: "This significant investment in the area would also bring additional trade and shoppers into the town, which will be of benefit to the town centre and other businesses in the area."

A public exhibition of the supermarket giant's plans will be held at Larkhall Leisure Centre on 7 and 8 November from 0900 till 1600 BST.
