Joke Glitter e-mails investigated

Gary Glitter

Nine council workers in South Lanarkshire have been suspended over claims they sent joke e-mails about convicted paedophile Gary Glitter.

The staff are thought to include members of the children and family services department.

They were said to have been sent home after the e-mails were tracked by the council's IT unit.

The e-mails were understood to feature pictures of children's faces stuck on images of former pop star Gary Glitter.

A South Lanarkshire Council spokeswoman said: "A number of employees have been suspended as the result of an ongoing inquiry into the misuse of the council's internal e-mail.

"We can't comment further at this stage of the inquiry."
