Man dies in city centre shooting

A murder inquiry has been launched following a double shooting in Glasgow city centre.

George Redmond died and John McGuire was seriously injured when they were gunned down near the Waldorf Bar, Cambridge Street, on Monday night.

The victims, both aged 42, were taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary.

Police are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the shootings to come forward with any information that may help them with their inquiries.

Strathclyde Police said the men were shot as they were leaving the pub.

A post-mortem examination on Mr Redmond was due to be carried out on Tuesday.

Mr McGuire is still in a serious condition in hospital.

Det Supt John Riggans said: "Enquiries are progressing at a rapid pace although we are still at an early stage in the investigation and still trying to put together the events of last night.

"Forensic and ballistic experts have attended the scene and officers will be looking at CCTV footage as well as conducting door-to-door enquiries around the area."

The shooting is the second in Glasgow in less than a week.

A 22-year-old man was shot in the Calton area last Wednesday.

Police were keen to ensure members of the public that the city centre is still safe.

Supt Tom Doran, from Stewart Street police office, said: "We are doing everything we can to minimise disruption and to make sure that people feel safe on the streets no matter what time of day it is.

"Additional high visibility officers will be patrolling the area for the foreseeable future to reduce the fear of crime locally and we have secured mutual aid from other divisions to assist with this police investigation."
