Howson lands 'iconic' commission

Peter Howson

One of Scotland's most famous painters has been commissioned by the Catholic Church to create a huge "iconic" work in St Andrews Cathedral in Glasgow.

Peter Howson will construct the largest crowd scene ever painted in Scotland with upwards of 600 individual figures.

When complete, the work will become the focal point in the renewed worship space in the cathedral when it re-opens after renovation works in 2010.

Howson is best known for paintings of the Bosnian war and the singer Madonna.
