Spiderman author lured to Airdrie

Spider-Man

Top selling comic book author Mark Millar is one of the star attractions at this year's North Lanarkshire Book Festival.

Mr Millar, from Coatbridge, is a writer with Marvel comics and has worked on characters including Spider-man, Superman and the X-men.

He will appear at Sir John Wilson, Town Hall, Airdrie on Saturday 4 October as part of the Words 2008 festival.

Events are taking place at libraries and schools across the region.

The comic book writer, who is also now making a name for himself in the movie business, will hold a question and answer session.

Fans will be able to quiz him about some of their favourite super heroes, and his latest work on Hollywood blockbuster, Wanted, starring Angelina Jolie, and another Scot, James McAvoy.

Other authors appearing at the festival of books and writing include Booker prize winner, James Kelman, Christopher Brookmyre, and spy-novel writer, Charles Cumming.

There are also plenty of events planned for children and young people.

Julia Donaldson, author of the beloved "Gruffalo" picture book is appearing at Cumbernauld library and Cathy Forde, author of Skarrs and Sugarcoated, will be visiting Kilsyth and Shotts libraries.

Barbara Philliben, community learning and libraries manager said: "For out our third book festival we gratefully acknowledge the support of the Scottish Arts Council which has allowed us to expand the number and range of authors visiting libraries, schools and other community venues.

"All events are free of charge and we hope that there is something for everyone whatever their literary tastes or age."

The festival runs until 11 October and tickets for the events can be booked through the box office on 01698 403120.
