Images issued over Lennon attack

Police have taken the unusual step of issuing CCTV footage of two men they want to speak to following an assault on Celtic coach Neil Lennon.

The former Celtic and Northern Ireland player was knocked unconscious during the attack in the city's Ashton lane shortly after midnight on 31 August.

The attack happened hours after Celtic lost against Old Firm rivals Rangers.

Both men are described as white, of medium to heavy build, and were wearing dark jackets and jeans.

The release of the footage follows discussions between Strathclyde Police and lawyers at the Crown Office.

The first man being sought is described as white, of heavy build, with dark hair and between 5ft 10in and 6ft in height.

He was wearing a black leather jacket and jeans.

The second man is described as white, of medium build with mousey brown hair, between 5ft 8in and 5ft 10in in height.

'Sectarian abuse'

He was wearing a dark jacket and jeans.

Det Sgt Scott Douglas, of Strathclyde Police, urged anyone with information about the attack, or the two men in the CCTV footage, to contact officers.

After the assault in August, a friend of Lennon's told the BBC that the 37-year-old Celtic coach had gone out for a drink with friends in Ashton Lane at about 2200 BST.

He said that when Lennon left shortly after midnight he heard someone shout sectarian abuse.

The friend said Lennon was then "jumped from behind, hit over the head and knocked unconscious".

The Celtic coach was spotted lying in the street by a steward from a nearby pub, who called an ambulance.

The friend said Lennon's partner, who had been trying to contact him, was "extremely distressed" when she learned that he was being treated in hospital.
