Crash police seek female witness

Police uniform

Police investigating a road crash on the M8 which claimed the lives of a mother and her two-year-old son want to speak to a woman who stopped to help.

Laura and Kieran Binns, from Largs, died after the collision in a contraflow near Harthill, North Lanarkshire on 31 August at 1930 BST.

The two female drivers of the cars remain in a serious condition.

Officers have renewed their appeal for witnesses and want to speak to a woman who pulled over and gave first aid.

Pc Pamela Campbell, from the road policing department at Motherwell, appealed for anyone who saw the crash to come forward.

'Vital information'

"I would like to talk to any drivers who may have been travelling eastbound at around 1930 hours and may hold vital information as to how this collision occurred," she said.

"In particular, I am appealing for a woman who is believed to be of Eastern European origin to come forward, it is believed that she helped to administer first aid at the scene of the accident and may have seen what happened."

Police said the 28-year-old driver of a Ford Mondeo apparently lost control of her car in a contraflow system set up on the westbound carriageway for eastbound traffic and hit an oncoming vehicle.

She was said to be in a serious condition and being treated at Wishaw General Hospital.

The 31-year-old driver of the Vauxhaull Corsa, in which Ms Binns and her son were passengers, was being treated at Southern General Hospital.
