Armed bank robberies are 'linked'

An armed robbery on security guards outside a bank in Glasgow has been linked to a similar crime earlier this month by police.

Two masked men escaped with a six-figure sum after attacking guards outside the Bank of Scotland in Shawlands, at about 0120 BST.

A security guard required hospital treatment for cuts to his arm and hand after being struck with a knife.

Police linked the raid to a robbery at a bank in Pollokshields on 9 August.

Two masked men escaped with a six-figure sum after threatening security staff outside the Bank of Scotland in Albert Drive.

"We are working round the clock to trace those responsible"

Det Sup Michael Orr, from Strathclyde Police, said there was a "clear link" between both robberies.

"Both incidents have left the victims completely traumatised, but this morning's robbery was particularly violent and has left one of the men with injuries to his arm and hand," he said.

"The suspects quite clearly have no regard for their victims whatsoever, and will do whatever it takes to execute this crime.

"We are well aware of the public concerns here and the danger faced by all who are involved in this business.

"We would like to re-assure communities that we have a significant number of force resources now deployed, including firearms officers, and we are working round the clock to trace those responsible."

Det Sup Michael Orr appealed for anyone with information to contact police.

He added: "A reward of £10,000 has been offered for information leading to the arrest of those responsible for the two most recent attacks. We hope this will encourage people to come forward."
