Police target city graffiti tags

Vandalism poster

Police are to photograph and catalogue the personalised signatures used by graffiti 'artists' in a bid to prevent vandalism across Glasgow.

A poster will also be placed next to the tags appealing for information and informing local people that action is being taken.

Glasgow Community and Safety Services (GCSS) will then be deployed to clean the affected areas.

Cleaning graffiti damage costs Glasgow hundreds of thousands of pounds a year.

Areas that have been targeted recently include the Clydeside Express Way at the harbour side, underpasses and railway bridges.

Insp Jim Haddow, from Strathclyde Police, said: "It is important for these vandals to understand the harm they are causing to the community.

"It degrades neighbourhoods and is extremely costly to remove.

"We want to find the people responsible for this and put a stop to this anti-social behaviour.

"During this initiative, we hope that people will come forward and give us the names of any 'taggers' they can identify."
