New appeal to identify Islay body

Artist's impression

A new appeal is being made for information about a man's body which washed up on Islay two years ago.

A missing persons' charity has urged the public to help identify the body of the man found on the island's beach.

The man was washed at Portnahaven in 2006, but extensive investigations failed to establish his identity.

The charity, Missing People, has issuing a description and an artist's impression of the dead man in the hope that someone will recognise him.

He was 45-60 years old, with dark collar-length hair and no lower teeth.

He had a tattoos on each forearm: a thistle and scroll, "Scotland", and what is thought to be the initials "DF".

He also wore a Celtic design criss-cross ring on the middle finger of his right hand.

Clothes worn by the man

It is thought that he may have died up to a week before 10 April 2006, when he was found.

The charity, formerly the National Missing Persons Helpline, said unidentified people are mostly also missing people and it is hoping to end someone's distress.

Anyone with information about the man's identity is being asked to call Missing People on 0500 700 700 or email identification@missingpeople.org.uk.
