Solidarity councillor defection

Ruth Black Solidarity's only councillor has defected to the Labour Party in Glasgow, it has emerged.

Councillor Ruth Black, who was elected in May to represent the Craigton ward, resigned from the party on Thursday.

She said her decision had come after weeks of talks with council leader Steven Purcell.

It also comes days after Solidarity leader Tommy Sheridan was charged with perjury in connection with his News of the World defamation case.

Ms Black said: "Being part of the administration will give me an opportunity to assist with the equalities agenda."

She was a member of the Scottish Socialist Party and then Solidarity for eight years.
