Man arrested over train collision

Train crash, pic courtesy of Network Rail A 20-year-old man has been arrested after a freight train crashed into a car in East Ayrshire.

Police believe the Vauxhall Corsa had been on the track near Cumnock for about an hour before it was hit at about 0240 GMT.

Investigators said the car, which had plunged from the nearby A76, was empty when it was hit by the train and pushed 400 metres down the track.

A search was launched for a man and a woman who had been in the car.

It involved two helicopters, police dogs and network rail staff.

The man has been charged with road traffic offences.

No-one on the train, which was hauling 1,800 tonnes of coal, was injured.
