Experts confirm new E.coli case

E. coli

There has been a further case of the E.coli O157 infection linked to the investigation surrounding two Morrisons supermarkets in Paisley.

The latest victim, an 81-year-old woman, is in a stable condition at the town's Royal Alexandra Hospital.

She had eaten cold cooked meats bought from the delicatessen counter of one of the two stores involved.

The incident has taken the total number of confirmed cases to nine, NHS Greater Glasgow confirmed.

Home recovery

Dr Syed Ahmed, who is chairing the outbreak control team, said: "From a public health point of view, it is encouraging that all confirmed cases so far consumed deli meat before the outbreak was identified."

A 72-year-old man is in a serious but stable condition at the Victoria Infirmary and a 70-year-old Paisley woman has remained stable in hospital in the Republic of Ireland.

Meanwhile, a 71-year-old woman being treated at the Royal Alexandra Hospital has been cleared for discharge and the other four individuals affected have been recovering well at home.

Dr Ahmed added: "While there is still no conclusive evidence, we believe that cold cooked meats from Morrison's Lonend and Falside Road branches are still the most likely vehicles of infection and no other food, from Morrison's or elsewhere, has been implicated so far."
