Celtic baby called Lisbon Lyons

Sharlene Lyons, 21, picked the name to mark the 40th anniversary of the Celtic Lisbon Lions team lifting the European Cup in the Portuguese capital.

The single mum, from Greenock, admitted many people thought she was joking when she told them her daughter's name.

But she said little Emily Lisbon would be able to choose whether to use her full name when she was older.

Sharlene, who gave up a performing arts course when she fell pregnant with Emily Lisbon, came up with the idea for the name after older brother John, 24, joked about calling his own daughter Lisbon if he ever had children.

She said: "I really liked it as a first name but then I thought people might think Lisbon Lyons was a bit much so I decided to call her Emily Lisbon instead.

"A lot of people think it is a joke but I don't. I really like it which is the main thing and so do my family.

"It makes it even more special because it's the 40th anniversary of the Lisbon Lions this year as well."

Sharlene, who admitted she and her family were "Celtic daft", said she was confident her daughter would also grow up to follow the Hoops.

Her brother has already offered to take Emily Lisbon, who was born weighing 7lb 9oz, to Celtic Park to watch the team in action as soon as she is old enough.

"She will be totally surrounded by Celtic. I don't think there's any chance of her growing up to be a Rangers fan," Sharlene said.

"If she wanted to support Greenock Morton I would let her, but definitely not Rangers.

"I'll call her by the two names but once she's old enough she doesn't need to use Lisbon if she doesn't like it."

If Emily Lisbon ever has a younger brother, Sharlene has already decided to call him Aiden, after Celtic winger Aiden McGeady.

Celtic's team was nicknamed the Lisbon Lions after they became the first British side to lift the European Cup after defeating Inter Milan in 1967.
