Angelika murder trial under way

Angelika Kluk A 60-year-old man has gone on trial at the High Court in Edinburgh accused of raping and murdering a Polish student.

Peter Tobin denies killing Angelika Kluk, 23, in St Patrick's Church, Anderston, Glasgow, or elsewhere.

It is alleged he attempted to defeat the ends of justice by concealing her body under the chapel floor between 24 and 29 September last year.

Mr Tobin lodged a special defence stating he had sexual intercourse with Ms Kluk with her consent.

The trial before Lord Menzies is expected to last about six weeks.

The judge told the jury the case had attracted a lot of press coverage but they must listen carefully to the evidence presented in court.

Mr Tobin is alleged to have covered the 23-year-old's mouth with tape and bound her hands before carrying out the attack and repeatedly striking her with a knife or similar object.

Prosecutors allege that he tried to pervert the course of justice by pretending to Strathclyde Police officers that he was called Patrick McLaughlin, and by claiming to staff at the National Neurology and Neurosurgery Hospital in London that he was called James Kelly.

Tobin, listed as an inmate at Greenock Prison, denies all of the charges against him.

The trial continues.
