No gas to homes after water leak

Burst water mains in Edinburgh

A large area of central Edinburgh is without gas after a water main burst led to the supply being shut down.

About 2,000 properties around Thistle Street in the city's New Town have been without gas since the burst at 1130 BST on Saturday.

Scotia Gas Networks said it had to switch off the gas supply to every property before it could remove the water from the main.

It said it could be well into next week before the problem was solved.

Scotia Gas Networks said it switched off gas at more than 600 premises on Saturday.

It had drafted in large numbers of staff in a bid to complete the remaining properties on Sunday.

The company will then need to remove the water using specialist equipment before it can turn the gas back on.

It said a letter would be given to all gas users with a number to call if they had difficulties.

The 24-hour customer service centre is on 0845 070 1432.

A list of the streets affected is available on the Scotia Gas Networks website.
