A tape recording is to play a crucial part in the trial of Kenny Richey, who is accused of assaulting a 63-year-old man in Edinburgh, a court has heard.
It is alleged Mr Richey, 44, left Robert McCall severely injured, permanently impaired and endangered his life in an assault at his flat in July.
Mr Richey, who denies the charges, appeared at the High Court in Edinburgh for a preliminary hearing.
His defence counsel asked for more time in which to transcribe the tape.
He did not say what the tape recording was, but said it was "of the utmost importance".
Defence counsel Ronnie Renucci asked for a further preliminary hearing.
Judge Lord Brodie agreed to continue the hearing for two weeks until 20 January and said Mr Richey should remain in custody until then.
