Farmers' market secures licence

Edinburgh Farmers' Market

A popular farmers' market which was cancelled at the last minute after it emerged it did not have a licence is to run again at the weekend.

Essential Edinburgh, which runs Edinburgh Farmers' Market in Castle Terrace on Saturdays, has now gained an Edinburgh City Council licence.

It is understood it had not had a licence since the market changed hands in July.

The licence is granted to the company rather than the market.

A spokesman for Essential Edinburgh said: "We have worked closely with Edinburgh City Council to resolve the administrative issues which came to light late last week, and are delighted that the market will be operating as normal this weekend.

"We are sorry that the event had to be cancelled last week, and we will be giving the traders this week's event free of charge"

"The market is a popular event, and important to the traders who take part.

"In fact, the event is so successful that we have a long waiting list of quality traders keen to participate.

"We are sorry that the event had to be cancelled last week, and we will be giving the traders this week's event free of charge."

Jenny Dawe, Edinburgh City Council leader, said: "The market is a great asset for our city, and I am happy that we have managed to resolve the administrative issues.

"I am delighted that traders and customers can look forward to buying and selling great food in the run-up to Christmas."

The market runs between 0900 GMT and 1400 GMT on Saturdays.
