Scottish landscape artist John Houston has died, aged 78.

The Fife artist, who was born in Buckhaven and studied at Edinburgh College of Art from 1948 to 1954, died peacefully on Saturday.

Houston is known for his intense atmospheric landscapes exploring the dramatic effects of weather and light.

He joined the staff of Edinburgh College of Art in the 50s and married fellow student Elizabeth Blackadder, also a famous artist, in 1956.

His funeral is to be held on Saturday at 1130 BST at Mortonhall Crematorium Main Chapel.
