Police put brakes on boy racers

Racer

Boy racers who continue to abuse Kirkcaldy's Esplanade are being targeted in a new police crackdown.

Fife Constabulary will work alongside CCTV operators in a bid to catch the offenders.

It follows complaints about the noise of horns sounding and music blaring into the small hours of the morning.

Police will focus on legislation and laws which allow seizure of both uninsured vehicles and those which are being used in an anti-social way.

The operation is part of the force's policing plan commitment to create safer neighbourhoods by reducing anti-social behaviour and improving road safety.

Kirkcaldy's Sgt Paul Rennie said: "Many of the residents who stay on the Esplanade have suffered as a result of noise nuisance from the car enthusiasts who are attracted to the Esplanade many nights of the week.

"While we will first attempt to persuade them to leave the area, they can be assured that, if they do not listen we will take all possible steps to enforce the legislation available to us."

Chairman of Fife Constabulary's fire and safety committee, George Kay, said that it was time to bring home to young people the "misery and fear" that the boy racer culture could generate.

He said: "We can do this in a number of ways from dialogue to deterrents. The choice rests with the perpetrators and the consequences will be brought home by the police until we finally get our message across."
