Tories pick by-election candidate

The Conservative Party has announced its candidate for the upcoming Glenrothes by-election.

Maurice Golden, 28, is an environmental campaign manager for Keep Scotland Beautiful and a former student campaigner.

He stood in the Central Fife seat for the party at the Holyrood elections last year.

It comes as Conservative Party leader David Cameron has challenged the prime minister to join the campaign.

Mr Cameron said: "I will be campaigning and supporting Maurice on the streets of Glenrothes.

"I hope that Gordon Brown will rise to the challenge of campaigning in his own backyard so that the voters can see for themselves the choices on offer."

The constituency neighbours Mr Brown's own Kirkcaldy and Cowdenbeath seat. No date has been set for the by-election.

Mr Golden, who is from Newport-on-Tay in Fife, said: "The people of Glenrothes face a clear choice in this Westminster by-election between Gordon Brown and a divided Labour Party and a rejuvenated Conservative Party."

The by-election was triggered by the death of Labour MP John MacDougall earlier this month.
