Kidney mother and son doing well

Michael Corrigan and Michelle Smith

A mother and son who underwent surgery so she could donate a kidney to him are both reported to be doing well.

Michelle Smith, 37, has been discharged from hospital and is recovering from the operation at home in Leven, Fife.

Her 18-year-old son Michael has been moved out of the intensive care unit onto a ward at the Yorkhill Hospital for Sick Children in Glasgow.

He needed a new kidney because of a condition called Cystinosis which attacks the cells in his body.

Michael underwent a transplant five years ago but complications meant his body started to reject it.

'Doing well'

In recent months he has been having to make three or four trips to the hospital in Glasgow a week for dialysis.

Michelle's partner, Mark Corrigan, told the BBC Scotland news website: "Michael got out of intensive care on Saturday and he is doing really well.

"Michelle came home last night. She is still in a bit of pain but all is well. She was home a day earlier than expected."

Mr Corrigan said both operations had gone well and that they were expecting Michael to be discharged in about two weeks.

"They were able to use the full kidney," he said. "They thought they would have to take some away but that proved not to be."
