Armed raider robs city newsagent

Police

A raider who robbed an Edinburgh newsagent at knifepoint is being sought by police.

The masked man walked into RS McColl on Craigentinny Avenue and demanded cash from the 22-year-old female shop assistant on Sunday at about 2150 BST.

The manager came through from the back office and she was ushered to the till by the suspect who produced a knife.

When a three-figure sum of money was handed over, the man walked calmly from the shop.

The robber was described as being white, 5ft 8in, of slight build with a local accent.

He was wearing a dark blue baseball cap, a dark hood over the hat, and dark jacket, jeans and gloves.

His mask seemed to be made of cardboard with eyeholes cut out.

A police spokeswoman said: "The two women who were in the shop at the time fortunately escaped injury, but have been left understandably shaken by the incident.

"We would appeal for anyone with any information about the robbery to get in touch.

"Similarly, we would ask anyone who recognises the description to contact police."
