A cyclist has died after a collision involving a dumper truck in an Edinburgh city centre street.

The 35-year-old man died following the incident at about 0930 BST on Tuesday at the junction of West Richmond Street and Nicolson Street.

A Lothian and Borders Police spokesman said temporary traffic diversions had been put in place.

A police tent was erected in the middle of the street while investigations took place.

The cyclist was turning left into Nicolson Street from West Richmond Street when he was in collision with the vehicle.

He suffered serious injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

A police spokesman appealed for witnesses.

He said: "An investigation is under way to establish the cause of the collision and the driver is assisting with inquiries."

A spokeswoman for Neil Williams Haulage, which is understood to own the dumper truck, declined to comment.
