Residents who were moved from nearby properties when a massive blaze took hold of a block of flats may not be allowed home for up to 48 hours.

Homes were evacuated and about 50 residents had to spend the night in alternative accommodation following the blaze in Edinburgh.

Fire crews were called to the five storey flats, in Hawkhill Close, on Saturday afternoon.

The building, containing 82 flats, was under construction.

It suffered a massive structural collapse but there were no reports of injuries.

'Wait for engineers'

The residents were taken to Hibernian's nearby Easter Road stadium for safety over fears that a tower crane could collapse.

Lothian and Borders Police said they would probably not be allowed home for up to two days, until it was confirmed that the area is safe.

John Dickie, group manager with Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service, said: "They won't be allowed in for 48 hours.

"We're having to wait for engineers from Germany and England because the top of the crane is going to have to be removed.

"We are continuing to dampen down the fire. It's going to be a long process."

He said they were trying to get people back into their homes for short periods of time, under escort by police and fire crews, to pick up any belongings they need.

He said the cold weather, including snow showers, made it difficult for the teams, who are being given hot food and drink by the Women's Royal Voluntary Service.

At its height 50 firefighters tackled the blaze. An investigation has been launched to establish the cause of the fire.
