A campaign has been launched in Fife to crack down on attacks against counter staff in betting shops.
On average, five robberies are carried out on betting shops in the UK every day and unions want to raise awareness of the dangers faced by workers.
The Mid-Scotland and Fife MSP John Park is backing the Safer Scotland poster campaign, along with the Scottish TUC.
About 4,500 people work in 900 betting shops in Scotland, with predictions that the industry is likely to grow.
More than 500 further licences have been applied for in Scotland but have yet to be made active.
Meat cleaver
Shop workers were subjected to a series of violent attacks during 2007.
Campaign organisers said firearms, machetes, swords and a meat cleaver had been used in raids, and some staff have been punched and kicked.
"We are concerned at the unwillingness of some chains to protect their employees and take action to stamp out unacceptable behaviour"
Mr Park said: "These incidents have an impact on staff, their family and the whole community.
"It is unacceptable that people have to work in fear of abuse just for doing their job."
Ian Telford, Scottish organiser for the Community trade union, said: "Abusive behaviour, shouting and swearing can be a criminal offence and we are encouraging staff to report it.
"As a trade union, we are concerned at the unwillingness of some chains to protect their employees and take action to stamp out unacceptable behaviour. We hope this campaign will improve working people's lives."
