Bridge tolls' demolition begins

Tollbooth demolition Commuters are being warned to expect delays after work to remove the Forth Road Bridge's tollbooths began.

Transport Minister Stewart Stevenson last month signed an order removing the tolls from 11 February.

The first phase of the project, which got under way on Wednesday evening, saw the removal of three booths and one of the concrete plinths.

The rest of the booths will be taken away later and new signs put up in a project set to cost up to £2m.

The ramp from the Echline roundabout is also being widened for a bus priority lane.

Tony Martin of the bridge's management company, the Forth Estuary Transport Authority, said: "There will inevitably be some short-term disruption while the toll plaza is remodelled."

The bridge's current toll booths were opened in 2006 at a cost of £4m.
