At least a quarter of a million people watched as a traditional fireworks display marked the close of the Edinburgh Festival season.

Both residents and visitors took to the streets of the capital to watch the dramatic display on Sunday night.

More than 100,000 fireworks weighing four tonnes lit up the city's skies, accompanied by music from the Scottish Chamber Orchestra from 2100 BST.

The music was from composers including George Gershwin and Leonard Bernstein.

The 45-minute display, sponsored by the Bank of Scotland, took place at Edinburgh Castle.

Traditional finale

A team of 15 technicians, led by firework artists Wilf Scott and Keith Webb, took six days to lay out all the fireworks ahead of the event, the traditional finale to the Edinburgh International Festival.

Jonathan Mills Edinburgh International Festival director, said: "My first festival as director has been a tremendous thrill and one of the highlights has to be this most remarkable and inclusive of finales."

Culture Minister Linda Fabiani said: "The fireworks concert is a fitting end to a fantastic month in Scotland's capital city.

"The Scottish Chamber Orchestra has played a prominent role in the Edinburgh International Festival and the concert brought things to a spectacular close."
