Child dies in playground accident

It is understood Charly McCraw-Clark became entangled in a rope attached to the climbing frame.

The tragedy happened at a park near Maitland Hog Lane in the village of Kirkliston, near Edinburgh, on Tuesday.

Charly was taken to St John's Hospital in Livingston but died later, Lothian and Borders Police said.

The girl, whose home backs on to the park, was spotted by a neighbour at about 1525 BST.

It is believed she was in the park alone and the death is not being treated as suspicious.

Grandfather Alexander Clark, 52, spoke on behalf of the family, Charly's mother, Catrina, her father Charles (known as Cha) and older brother, Jayme, six.

He said: "She was our princess and a totally amazing girl. She was just full of life.

"She loved playing with her dolls and playing outside. She was a real Barbie who loved everything pink.

"We've all been devastated by Charly's death. All of our hearts have been ripped out."

He added that support from friends and neighbours had been "amazing" and sent his thanks to those people who tried to save Charly's life at the swing park.

A report is due to be submitted to the procurator fiscal.

'Terrible tragedy'

Junie Drylie, head teacher at Kirkliston Nursery School, said Charly had attended for the past four months.

She said: outside - always keen to try new things. She was a confident, helpful little girl who enjoyed playing with her friends.

"All nursery school staff and families are deeply saddened by this terrible tragedy."

Councillor Robert Cairns, Edinburgh City Council streetscape leader, said: "I have been informed of the death of a three-year-old at Maitland Hogg Lane Play Park.

"Our thoughts are with the family at this sad time. Council officers have been on site in support of the emergency services."
