A package of measures to support Edinburgh businesses during the construction of the city's tram system have been announced.
Preparatory work on the project is set to begin next spring with the trams becoming operational in 2011.
Businesses on Leith Walk, Princes Street and West Maitland Street could receive a 20% rates reduction.
Small shops suffering financial loss due to construction could also receive "top up" finance to help them cope.
The package has been drawn up by Tie - the group behind the trams, Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce and City of Edinburgh Council.
'Helping hand'
Last month, the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) wrote to city leader Ewan Aitken calling on him to help retailers worried about the effect construction will have on their shops.
Willie Gallagher, chairman of Tie, said: "Businesses may be inconvenienced during construction. What we want to do is give them a helping hand through this period."
Mr Aitken said: "Trams will benefit businesses and further advance Edinburgh's successful economy by adding to transport choices and protecting the environment.
"It is, however, only right, fair and proper that we help to alleviate any short-term effects as the project is delivered."
The scheme is still to be approved by the council and is expected to be considered next month.
