Browns' new baby James in debut

Gordon and Sarah Brown with baby James Fraser Proud parents Gordon and Sarah Brown have shown off new baby James Fraser for the first time in Edinburgh.

The chancellor held the youngster, born on Monday, as the couple thanked staff at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, before leaving at 1115 BST.

Nurses handed the couple a bouquet of flowers before the Browns posed for photos with their new son.

Mrs Brown, wearing a dark dress, did not speak while her husband, in a light blue shirt, accepted congratulations.

James appeared to be asleep and did not make any noise. He is the second son for the couple, who have been married for six years.

Big brother - two-year-old John - was taken to meet the new arrival at the hospital earlier in the week.

The Browns' first child, Jennifer Jane, died aged 10 days after being born prematurely in 2002.

'Incredibly happy'

Mr Brown, the MP for Kirkcaldy and Cowdenbeath, told reporters earlier this week that James appeared "strong and healthy" and had his brother's blue eyes.

He added that John was "incredibly happy" about the new addition to the family.

The chancellor said on Tuesday: "I love being a dad. It's great fun and there's nothing more important and there's nothing I enjoy better.

"Sarah and I are both delighted. This is a wonderful addition. I think the two boys are going to get on very well together."

He now intends to take time off on paternity leave and will not be "rushing back" to his work at the Treasury.
