Sad tale of the vanishing 'cow'

Kathryn Pennel A cow sculpture which is part of a public art project in Edinburgh has gone missing.

Kathryn Pennel, from Dunfermline, is devastated after the cow she designed for arts event CowParade disappeared.

The 12-year-old was the winner of a Lloyds TSB Scotland competition to design a cow for the parade, which raises money for charity.

The fibreglass cow, one of 94 in the capital, was outside the bank's Hanover Street branch.

At the weekend, it was vandalised and was due to be repaired but bank staff found it had vanished by Wednesday.

Lothian and Borders Police are now looking at CCTV footage and are urging witnesses to come forward.

Kathryn's mother, Janine Pennel, said: "She's really disappointed. She was delighted when she heard her design had won and thought it looked great when she saw it at the CowParade launch last week.

"She hadn't even had a chance to see it at Hanover Street and she had been looking forward to going along with her family this weekend to see it but that might not happen now.

"Hopefully, whoever has it will let the bank know where they can find it."

Missing cow

Kathryn, who named the cow Fruit Smooothie, said: "I really liked Fruit Smooothie, I hope someone gets her back soon."

Manus Fullerton, the bank's director of corporate and business banking, who painted the cow said: "We're all really disappointed that Fruit Smooothie has disappeared.

"She certainly brightened up the street. Hopefully she'll be back soon and we can get a smile back on Kathryn's face."

A CowParade spokesman said: "The majority of the cows will be sold off for auction in September and by vandalising and stealing the cows the local charities Vet Aid and One City Trust will lose out."
