What the Scottish papers say

Most of the Scottish papers lead with the murder of two British soldiers at an Army barracks in Northern Ireland.

The Daily Record says Catholics and Protestants have joined hands in Antrim to mourn the soldiers murdered by terrorists in their town.

The Herald says the Real IRA, the dissident Republican group, claimed responsibility for the gunning down of the soldiers in an execution-style attack.

The Scottish Sun reports that the two unarmed soldiers sacrificed themselves to prevent a massacre.

And according to the Press and Journal, the soldiers were wearing desert fatigues and were just minutes away from leaving for Afghanistan.

The Courier also reports on the story, while the Scottish Daily Mail says hours after the soldiers became the first to be killed in Northern Ireland for 12 years, Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams found himself in the firing line.

The Scotsman leads with a story that student hardship in Scotland has reached a "critical" level as universities run out of funds to help those struggling to find enough money to continue their courses.

The Scottish Daily Express says nine out of 10 cancer deaths could be prevented after scientists searching for a cure discovered a "missing piece in the jigsaw".
