Child abuse man jailed in Albania

David Brown

A Scottish charity worker who ran a home for orphans in Albania has been jailed for 20 years after being found guilty of sexually abusing children.

David Brown, 57, from Edinburgh, founded the home in the Albanian capital, Tirana, eight years ago.

Brown, who denied the charges, was arrested in May 2006 and the orphanage was subsequently closed.

The judge described Brown as a "threat to society". He said the Scot would be deported after completing his sentence.

Brown was arrested during a police raid.

Two others who worked at the shelter were charged with molesting children.

As well as sex abuse charges, Brown was accused of overcrowding the orphanage and failing to stop others abusing the children.

A close friend of Brown, who asked not to be named, said Brown planned to appeal against the court's verdict.
