Scot drowned in Amsterdam river

Amsterdam

A Scottish tourist has drowned after falling from the deck of a hotel boat in Amsterdam.

Police in the Dutch capital said the 27-year-old man had been drinking before he fell into the River Ij at about 2300 BST on Saturday night.

Another passenger and two policemen jumped into the water after him but were unable to save him. His body was recovered by divers.

Police said they believed the death was an accident.

The man was with a relative when he fell.

Police have taken a blood sample for further investigation.

The Foreign Office confirmed a British national had drowned in Amsterdam at the weekend.

A spokeswoman said they were providing consular assistance to the man's family.

It is understood the 27-year-old is from the west of Scotland.
