City's 'eyesore' flats demolished

Hundreds of people living in the Sighthill area of Edinburgh have watched the demolition of a block of 1960s high-rise flats.

The tall block, considered an eyesore by many, came down shortly before midday as a 600-strong crowd looked on.

Former resident Ian Begg helped detonate the explosive charges.

The large-scale demolition saw a number of roads in the Sighthill area closed including Calder Road and Broomhouse Road.

Mr Begg, who lived in the building for its full 40 year life, helped demolish his former home by pushing the plunger with city housing leader Councillor Paul Edie.

He moved into Broomview Court in December 1967, just after it was built, and was among the last to move out last August.

Mr Edie said: "The blowdown was a truly spectacular sight and it all went like clockwork which is credit to everyone involved in the operation.

"I know that many people will have fond memories of Broomview Court but now we can look to the future as we drive to create new homes for the 21st Century."

The block was demolished as part of a housing regeneration drive for the city.
