A Scottish cyclist has won a gold medal on the first day of the Paralympics - and also broken her own world record.

Aileen McGlynn, 35, who is registered blind, successfully defended her title at the Beijing Games.

The Glaswegian, together with her pilot rider Ellen Hunter, won the women's 1km tandem time trial and lowered the record to one minute 9.066 seconds.

Swimmer Jim Anderson, from Fife, won silver in the S2 200m freestyle - the 14th Paralympic medal of his career.

The 45-year-old is competing in his fifth Paralympics.

He said: "My time could have been quicker in the final but I know I have enough left for my next three events."

'Fantastic start'

Afterwards, McGlynn said: "We're absolutely delighted to have broken the world record and the Paralympic record.

"It was a hard ride but we knew we had it in us to do the time.

"You just have to put the training in and have confidence in the training you do all year long and it's all going to work out on the day."

Sports Minister Stewart Maxwell paid tribute to the Scottish medal winners' success.

"James and Aileen have given the whole nation a lift with their magnificent performances," he said.

"It is a fantastic start and hopefully the first of many medals for Scotland's athletes competing in the GB team."

He added that First Minister Alex Salmond would be hosting a reception in Stirling Castle for all Scotland's Paralympians after their return from Beijing on 17 September.

Last week, Scottish athletes who competed at the Olympics were honoured at a reception at Edinburgh Castle.
