Flash flooding sparks call-outs

Heavy rain has caused flooding in central and southern Scotland resulting in an elderly couple being rescued by firefighters in the early hours.

The emergency services used an inflatable boat to take the pair from their home in Broxburn, West Lothian, after a river burst its banks.

There were 70 calls for assistance in Lanarkshire after flash floods damaged homes and trapped cars.

Forecasters have said the heavy rain would continue for much of the day.

The Borders, West Lothian, the Falkirk area, Stirlingshire, Glasgow, North Ayrshire and Argyll are most at risk.

The rescued couple in Broxburn were taken to St John's Hospital in Livingston for medical checks.

Flood warnings

Strathclyde Fire and Rescue Service alone reported more than 120 emergency calls.

Lanarkshire was particularly badly hit with Hamilton, Bothwell, Cambuslang, and East Kilbride among the worst areas affected.

Despite homes and other buildings being flooded, there were no reports of injuries or evacuations.

Group commander Alan Fairbairn, of Strathclyde Fire and Rescue Service, said: "The spate of flooding-related incidents which stretched [our] resources and operational control centre has now eased."

There was also flooding reported in Livingston, West Lothian. Emergency crews received a total of 13 calls.

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (Sepa) said 12 flood watches remain in place.
