Station worker killed in accident

Waverly sign A man working on the extension of Edinburgh's Waverley railway station has been killed in an accident.

Workers were trying to move a vehicle on to a low loader just after 0400 GMT on Tuesday when the incident happened.

Neil Martin, 47, from Essex, who was employed by Border Rail, was trapped and suffered multiple injuries.

Emergency services were called and the fitter was transferred to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, where he was pronounced dead.

A broken-down cherry picker-type vehicle was being removed from the building site in New Street and was being loaded onto a low loader parked in Calton Road.

Mr Martin, of North Street, Nazeing, was working on the new Balmoral through platform, one of two being built at the station as part of redevelopment.

Accident investigators

The Health and Safety Executive said it would be carrying out an investigation.

Investigators closed the road between the junctions of New Street and Leith Street while they worked at the scene.

A Lothian and Borders Police spokeswoman said: "We received a call from ambulance control just after 0400 GMT about a man trapped under a vehicle.

"We would appeal to anyone who witnessed the incident to contact police."
