De-icing kit for RAF helicopter

Sea King in snow The RAF is hoping to bring in de-icing equipment on Friday to help retrieve a helicopter stranded in the Cairngorms.

The Sea King from RAF Lossiemouth was forced to make an emergency landing after its rotors iced up while going to the rescue of an injured climber.

The crew abandoned the helicopter in Coire an t-Sneachda on Monday when it got into difficulty during a blizzard.

Bad weather has hampered efforts to clear the aircraft of snow and ice and fly it back to base.

A specialist team from England plans to try to use de-icing equipment on Friday to retrieve the helicopter.

The RAF Kinloss Mountain Rescue Team has set up camp at the scene to guard against trophy hunters or anyone trying to start up the helicopter.

An RAF spokesman said the service was able to provide its usual emergency cover without the aircraft.
