Men told to take health seriously

To help get the message across Health Minister Susan Deacon, on Friday, opened two marquees in Glasgow's George Square where men can go to get expert advice.

Ms Deacon says deaths from testicular and bowel cancer are showing a marked increase.

She said another big worry is the number of men with mental health problems committing suicide.

But as Men's Health Week draws to a close health professionals have warned that men's own approach to health is not helping.

Men north of the border are still more likely to die prematurely from heart disease and cancer. They are also less likely to visit their GP.

Deaths from testicular and bowel cancer are on the increase and three times as many men than women are likely to commit suicide.

As part of Men's Health Week the George Square marquees have been put up with the theme of "Healthy Body, Healthy Mind".

One marquee has a physical activity theme and the other offers alternative complimentary health demonstrations conducive to a healthy mind.

Men visiting the marquees can get expert help and advice as well as finding out about the range of health services available to them.
